Research assistant to work in the Microbial Contamination group – INVESTIGO Programme
IMDEA Water is a non-profit research Institute, promoted by the Regional Government of Madrid, to carry out research in water technologies. This Institute is part of the IMDEA network, the institutional framework that combines support from both the public and private sectors and harmonizes research with market demand, strengthening the presence of the private sector in science.

This call is to hire a research assistant to work on the Microbial Contamination group of the IMDEA Water Institute
Contract financed by the European Union – Next Generation EU, through the “Investigo Programme”, within the framework of the Recovery and Resilience Mechanism of the European Union.
The hired person will work as a research assistant in the Microbial Contamination group, participating in their research projects and will be trained in the identification of antibiotic resistant bacteria and antibiotic resistant genes. Tasks to be performed include:
- Collection of environmental samples (water, soil and crops) and then isolation of microorganism and genetic material from the different matrix.
- Manipulation, growth and maintenance of isolated microorganisms.
- Antibiotic susceptibility assays (antibiograms).
- Isolation of nucleic acids (DNA, plasmids) and molecular biology techniques (PCR, electrophoresis and gel documentation) for the dentification of microorganisms and detection and quantification of different genes.
- Writing of results reports, scientific publications and laboratory protocols.
In addition, this person will participate in the dissemination of research results (such as the preparation of scientific articles and the presentation of communications at congresses and conferences), as well as science dissemination events (European Researchers´ Night, Science and Innovation Week, etc.)
- MSc in Biology, Biochemistry or similar; or bachelor’s degree in Biology with a master´s degree, bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry with a master´s degree, or similar bachelor’s degree with a Master’s degreee EQF Level 7 (MECES 3).
- People who have not reached the age of 30 at the time the contractual relationship begins (Mid September, 2022).
- Candidates must be unemployed and registered as job seekers in the public employment service at the time the contractual relationship begins (Mid September, 2022).
- Knowledge in biology and molecular biology, mainly in microbiology
- Fluency in written and spoken English

Employment contract full-time: 37.5 hours/week
Annual gross salary: 24.000 €
