Research Assistant: CLEAN-CM project “Control and elimination of chemical and biological risks in the water cycle”

IMDEA Water is a non-profit research Institute, promoted by the Regional Government of Madrid, to carry out research in water technologies. This Institute is part of the IMDEA network, the institutional framework that combines support from both the public and private sectors and harmonizes research with market demand, strengthening the presence of the private sector in science.

Call to hire a research assistant to support CLEAN-CM project “Control and elimination of chemical and biological risks in water cycle” (REACT-UE resources of the Madrid Operational Program 2014-2020, in the line of action of R&D projects in response to COVID 19), whose objective is the study of methodologies to evaluate and eliminate biological risks (with SARS-CoV-2 as a model) and chemicals in different real matrices of the water cycle: wastewater, reclaimed water and groundwater.

Project and contract are funded by Comunidad de Madrid and the European Union, through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) Union “A way of making Europe”, funded as part of the Union's response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This contract will be financed through the agreement between the Community of Madrid (Regional Board of Education, Universities, Science and Spokesperson´s Office) and the IMDEA Water Foundation for the direct granting of a grant of 1,135,000.00 euros to finance the performance of actions in the field of research on SARS-COV2 and the COVID-19 disease financed with REACT-EU resources from the European Regional Development Fund.

The candidate will participate in various research tasks related to the environmental risk assessment of micro and nanoplastics.

The tasks to carry out are:

  • Water and sediment sampling in the laboratory and in the field. 
  • Development of analytical methods and identification of microplastics. 
  • Analysis of environmental samples.
  • Preparation of protocols and scientific reports.
  • M.Sc in Biology or Environmental Sciences, or bachelor’s degree in Biology or Environmental Sciences with a master´s degree. EQF Level 7 (MECES 3).
  • Experience on the sampling and identification of microplastics.  
  • Experience on scientific data analysis.
  • Basic level of English.

Employment contract full-time: 37.5 hours/week
